Once a year, the busy tone of Holmes Hall softens as the <a href="http://www.fgcu.edu/eng/" target="_blank"><b>U.A. Whitaker College of Engineering </b></a>students of all fields come together for a week of daily fun called E-week. It is an annual event hosted by the FGCU chapter of Florida Engineering Society.<br />

This year, the festivities began on Monday with a catered breakfast from Einstein Bagel on the fourth floor lounge and balcony. Given that the space is usually reserved as a place for teachers to escape, allowing it to be open to all was a treat for the students and a great way to kick off the E-week tradition with food and a great view.<br />

On Day 2, the students got a chance to try their hand at the classic dunk tank game. Between classes, students gathered to try their hand at sinking willing participants in a large Dunk Tank. The icing on the cake, however, was that these ‘willing participants’ were in fact the beloved instructors and staff!!!<br />

The halls were bustling, but not to the typical tune. Teachers, principals, administrators, superintendents, and counselors from grade schools all across the state flocked to FGCU’s<a href="http://www.fgcu.edu/eng/" target="_blank"><b> U.A. Whitaker College of Engineering</b></a> located in Holmes Hall for the University’s third consecutive Project Lead the Way (PLTW) State Conference. They listened to an assortment of orators and participated in collaborative discussions, in an effort to produce more efficient STEM curricula for their respective schools.</div>

<a href="http://www.fgcu.edu/" target="_blank"><b>FGCU</b></a>, being an affiliate University for PLTW, is responsible for hosting PLTW State Conferences and has provided teacher training for STEM teachers each summer for the past two years. Additionally, as a University with a reputable engineering program, there is a necessary exchange of information between the collegiate and grade school staff so that the two entities can provide a smooth pipeline for high school graduates to move through on their way into college STEM programs.</div>

I had the privilege of meeting with The PLTW Director of School Engagement for the state of Florida, Lanny Wood. As the Director of School Engagement, Lanny played a major part in the execution of today’s event and had much to say about the organization. He explained how the development of STEM curricula for the k -12 levels is a major focus of this national nonprofit. In his own words, their end goal is “Empowering students to thrive in this world that is continuing to evolve, through the PLTW curriculum”.</div>

With the program coming to an end and the attendees slowly filing out the door, he remarked how many new members had been in attendance and how encouraging it was to see so many instructors collaborate and realize that their dedication to student success is matched and supported by a network of like-minded individuals. The prospect of our future leaders has never been brighter.</div>

<b>The American Water Works Association</b> is dedicated to providing clean and practical water supply around the world; naturally, efficient water towers fit directly into that category. Water towers are used to provide potable water or resources in case of a fire emergency. A lot of thought goes into the design of these towers: cost, efficiency, Hydraulic retention rate (or how quickly the water leaves the tower), design aesthetics, etc.<br />

The high school students who took part in the competition were tasked with designing a creative water tower that meets standard requirements of materials, hydraulics and dimensions and were graded on such. <a href="http://www.fgcu.edu/eng/" target="_blank"><b>FGCU engineering students</b></a> aided in the filling and emptying of the water tanks, recording data as well as supervising the whole operation. Some of these designs were quite unique, like the Cola design tower.</div>

The judging was done by an impressive panel of judges in the Florida engineering community; Dr. Richard Lewis, P.E., journalist and community specialist Pamela Hayford, Kim Hoskins, P.E., and our very own<b> <a href="http://www.fgcu.edu/Eng/EnvCivDpt/1136.asp" target="_blank">Dr. Villiers </a></b>who was actively involved in this event. First and Second Place got $300 and $200 respectively, and Third Place got $100. These competitions are fun to watch but also challenge the young minds who may very well become engineers of the future.<br />
