<span style="font-weight: normal;">STEM@Work is a partnership between The Foundation for Lee County Public Schools and The School District of Lee County.</span> STEM@Work students across Lee County worked in teams to design their best tennis-ball launching catapults Wednesday using the knowledge they've gained in science, technology, engineering and math during this past year.</div>

There were 28 teams of about six students from the county's 13 high schools.  They were given PVC pipe, connectors, duct tape, rubber bands, a plastic cup, a ball and a standard piece of paper and set loose on the project in the courtyard next to the FGCU library. No one was given a ruler, but they were told the base couldn't be larger than 18 inches.  From there, it was trial and error.</div>

Sue Roshon, retired Director of Career Education for the Lee County School District, was back to volunteer after being one of the  "original brainchildren"  to create the STEM program five years ago.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"I believe in the program," she said. "I believe our kids need to experience hands-on, real-world activities."</div>

Shaw Development Special Projects Manager Tom Goettle  (who mingled among the students)  said "We need engineers, and it's hard to find engineers in this state with the right skill sets."<span style="font-weight: normal;"> "There's not a day goes by that everybody doesn't use math."  </span><br />

<span style="font-weight: normal;">"What a rewarding day it was! The end result of engaging our area businesses with our high schools students was a win/win for all!" says Marshall T. Bower, president and CEO of  The Foundation for Lee County Public Schools.</span><br />

The Scarlet Dagger, was constructed by approx. 20 FGCU students and measured 37 feet and 600 lbs.<br />
<br />
<b>It was the largest boat in Cape Coral's 19th Cardboard Boat Regatta Competition on Saturday, April 18 at Four Freedoms Park. </b><br />
<br />
It suffered a sinking of Titanic proportions, but a good time was had by all and money was raised for good cause.  Students wore pirate regalia and lobbed water balloons at their competitors.  Kyle Binninger said "We had a blast, regardless of the outcome".<br />

On Friday, Florida Gulf Coast University students showed off their redesign of Ponce de Leon Park. Their goal was to include the Peace River Wildlife Center.<br />
<br />
"The news that there's a viable option for the center to remain in Ponce Park has allowed us to feel hopeful for the first time since we found out our home in Ponce Park was in jeopardy," said Pat Campagna, board president of the wildlife center.<br />
<br />
The wildlife center is currently on land owned by Grande Harbor, LLC.  The odd situation was discovered when the property developer requested a variance in 2005.  The variance request found almost all of the wildlife center sits on Grande Harbor property. <br />
<br />
Board members say moving Peace River Wildlife will take at least $500,000.<br />
<br />
"It will take us some time to raise that money.  That's why we need to know we have a home," said Campagna.<br />
<br />
Staff volunteers say the Ponce de Leon Park location is key to attracting visitors.<br />
<br />
"Please take that to the people who are going to make a decision.  This is not just about buildings.  This is not just about money.  It's about the beauty of things that live here in Punta Gorda [and] the number one tourist attraction," said Penny Nelson, a wildlife rescuer.<br />
<br />
The group of engineering students will make their final design pitch later this month at FGCU.  It's an overall design pitch that could cost more than $1 million.<br />

The Florida Gulf Coast University hosts a biannual expo for prospective students to have an inside look at what is offered at the university. The Eagle EXPO is a wonderful opportunity for current students to share their experiences with prospective students. This opportunity allows for future students to ask questions and understand the academics, the experiences and the overall life as an Eagle at Florida Gulf Coast University. Each student attending the university has their own experience to express to these potential students taking the campus tours. This time which allows us, as current Eagles, to interact with these students and give them our experience, gives them proper preparation that they would not be able to access anywhere else.<br />

Eagle EXPO in the engineering department is far different from anything one could ever experience. The four floors in the Engineering building have distinct laboratories for each of the four engineering disciplines offered at Florida Gulf Coast University. Each floor truly conveys a few of the amazing labs each discipline conducts under their curriculum through their core engineering principles. Florida Gulf Coast University’s engineering department offers more than just the required curriculum, they offer actual labs pertaining to the real world in preparation for life after graduation. As seen in the video, prospective students are able to see the hands-on experience that each and every student attending Florida Gulf Coast University partakes in multiple times throughout their tenure here. The Faculty and Staff of Florida Gulf Coast University take the time and commitment to make sure every experience is unique and allows students to be adequately prepared for life after graduation. <br />

It is a culmination of years of planning that has often been slowed down by a wavering economy.<br />
<br />
Tuesday, FGCU officials including Simmons rejoiced as state and local leaders broke ground on the future site of the Emergent Technologies Institute.<br />
<br />
"It's an outreach from the university to the community and to the local industry and this gives us a place from which to do that," Simmons said.<br />
<br />
The facility - which is being constructed on six and half acres northeast of the main campus - is being labeled as the anchor of the Innovation Hub.<br />
<br />
The 240-acre development, FGCU President Wilson Bradshaw says, will be geared toward businesses specializing in environmental sustainability and renewable energy.<br />
<br />
"It's not only a cornerstone but it's going to be a magnet for other businesses and related industries to relocate here," said Bradshaw.<br />
<br />
The ETI itself is projected to cost around $12.5 million paid for by the state through efforts of the Florida Legislature and Governor Rick Scott.<br />
<br />
"It's a good investment on the state's behalf and if folks consider me a champion for that, it's something I'll be very proud of," said Sen. Lizbeth Benacquisto.<br />
<br />
State leaders say with a focus on the emergent technologies, the facility could also be breaking ground in other areas.<br />
<br />
"The utilization of new technologies in that arena, I think that's going to be focus here and that's very exciting because I don't think that exists anywhere else in state," Benacquisto said.<br />
<br />
The facility is set to open at the end of this year on an expanding a campus that continues to make a name for itself.<br />

Engineering research areas.  His earlier research focused on the
structural performance and durability of building enclosure systems subjected
to severe windstorm, earthquake and accelerated weathering effects. His work
emphasized experimental structural engineering as applied to glass and aluminum
curtain wall systems for multi-story buildings.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: black; font-size: 12pt;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">On the instructional side, Professor Behr developed and
implemented innovative teaching techniques for structural engineering and
engineering mechanics at the university level. His computer assisted,
small-scale, structural model mini-laboratory, "AN/EX," received
considerable interest from engineering educators and received sustained support
from the National Science Foundation.</span></span></div>

<span style="color: black; font-size: 12pt;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">As a Senior Research Engineer at the Atlantic Richfield
Corporation, Dr. Behr organized, conducted and administered research projects
supporting the development of ice load structural design criteria for offshore
arctic drilling platforms. Prior to that, he played a principal role in
developing an earth-sheltered housing research program at Texas Tech
University.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="color: black; font-size: 12pt;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Dr. Behr has published numerous papers in a variety of respected
engineering journals and has presented his work at major technical conferences

Engineering at Penn State University from 1997 – 2007, after which he was
appointed the Charles and Elinor Matts Professor of Architectural Engineering
and Director of the Penn State Smart Spaces Center <i>for successful aging in
place</i>.  He was named Dean of the U.A. Whitaker College of Engineering
at Florida Gulf Coast University in 2012.</span></span></div>

She received her Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering Health Care Management from the University of Wisconsin. She has served as the Vice President of Student Development for the Institute of Industrial Engineers. She is an ABET Program Evaluator for Industrial Engineering, Systems Engineering, <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Industrial Engineering Technology and General Engineering programs. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span>Her research interests are in engineering education, with particular emphasis on engineering entrepreneurship and service learning.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>She was selected to participate in the 2009-2010 Florida Campus Compact Engaged Scholarship Fellows program.<br />
